Planning to make panettone this weekend, so I thought I'd look back at my last attempt. This bread is, to put it mildly, a big fat hellish nightmare of a bake. It takes several days to build a stiff starter from your regular starter, and then a couple days more to make the final dough (and by dough, I mean soup, because that's what it looks like for the first 30 minutes of mixing). If you're incredibly lucky, you'll be rewarded at the end with something barely passable as bread. If you're a baking god with years of experience, you'll get an actual panettone.
This loaf was the first time (out of four attempts) that I reached the barely passable stage. I made it at my parents' house and when it came out of the oven my mom cried. That's how much of a pain in the ass it (and I) was during the process. I'm not sure what will happen this weekend, but if I never mention it again then it definitely went into the trash. .
