The deadlift is a great exercise that works your posterior chain, including our back and most of our leg muscles! Although your back is working in this exercise, your legs should take on the majority of the load & you shouldn’t feel a strain in your back! Your back should be neutral (straight). The reason I wanted to post on the deadlift is because it is a very common exercise that people tend to do incorrectly. My biggest recommendation is achieving a correct hip hinge and lifting off of blocks or a higher surface to reduce the risk of injury. This is more of a RDL but you can utilize my tips I provide & modify it for different styles of your deadlift. When it comes to aligning your diet with your fitness goals, one aspect I see people consistently struggle with is consuming enough protein on a regular basis.⁣ ⠀⁣ Of the three macronutrients (protein, fats, carbs), protein is typically the one that's lagging behind.⁣ ⠀⁣ Why is eating enough protein so important?⁣ ⠀⁣ 🍖 Protein is a crucial component in the muscle building and retaining process. You want muscle (you won't get bulky, I promise) not just for the visual appeal, but for the many health/performance benefits as well. Fun fact…the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn just existing…this is a nice plus.⁣ ⠀⁣ 🍗 Protein is also the most filling and satiating macronutrient, which is a big positive especially when restricting calorie intake. Staying full longer will keep you from sneaking back into the kitchen or break room much sooner than you need to.⁣ ⠀⁣ 🍳 The thermic effect of protein is another big plus. What genre of music do you listen to in the gym? Comment down below!👇 - It seems that when subjects listened to music they liked, it led to “on average” an increase of 1.5 reps on a set of bench press to failure at 75% of 1RM. It also improved velocity, power, and motivation [1] _ Other research suggests that listening to self-selected music improves resistance training performance [2], but other research does not [3] _ An extra rep and a half is not a whole lot, but if you’re going for a rep PR, that extra rep may be all you need. Or if you’re going for a 1RM attempt, having music on blast could be the reason you barely get the lift, vs just missing it, due to heightened arousal and motivation [4] _ On the flip side, if you’re too hyped up, technique might go out the window. Ultimately, you have to find out what state you perform best in. For me, I do better when I’m calm for bench press performance. But I do better hyped up for a squat, for example. _ You might prefer no music, calming music, white noise etc. It comes down to your mood and the type of lifter you are. If you want the answer to that question to be an impressive number (without lying), read below 💪🏼😁. - First, a bro split where you hit each body part once per week is not very conducive to getting stronger. Strength is partly a skill and the more often you practice a skill, the better you’ll become at that skill (to an extent). If you want to bench more weight, benching just once per week on chest day is not the most efficient method. - Second, your focus should be on compound exercises that train multiple muscle groups. If you add 100 pounds to your squat and deadlift in a year, you’ll be significantly stronger. If you spend most of your time doing bicep curls, you won’t be. - Lastly, it’s important to have some sort of mechanism to track progress and progressively overload. If you’re not doing more sets and/or reps over time then you aren’t getting stronger.
