TOFU OR TEMPEH? Info from our in-house dietitian @Theplantpotential
Both are fantastic and nutrient dense plant-based protein sources. Great sources of iron and zinc and Tofu being particularly rich in calcium!
I personally prefer tofu for a few reasons… number 1 being the cost/availability ($3 for a 450g block at ALDI)... Yeah it’s non GMO before anybody gets upset. Tempeh is usually around $6 or $7 for a block that is 200-300g.
Tofu is also mild in flavour and therefore more versatile in dishes as it takes on flavourings really well.
Soy does not affect reproductive hormones and research demonstrates consuming soy to be protective against cancers and chronic health conditions (1). Soy consumption can be something to be mindful of if you have a thyroid condition and poor iodine intake or if you have an allergy/intolerance to soy. Soy can interact with the absorption of thyroid medication, the same way other compounds like fibre and calcium can impact absorption… do we go around telling people to avoid fibre and calcium at all costs? No.
And soy is not bad for the environment… >80% of soy is grown to feed livestock. That is why there are large amounts of land cleared for soy, soy is better for the environment than most animal products (2). I just hope by now you realise you do not have to fear soy. It is very nutritious. And before anyone gets upset and comments something about soy being bad.
